Ok. To be fair, before I start this review I have to say that I wasn't aware that there were four books that I should have read before I read "Never Too Early: The Beginning". While I did notice that two authors wrote this one, I only went by the blurb, thought it sounded pretty good, and picked it up. Turns out that Chris Owen wrote two books called, "Bareback" and "Natural Disaster" about two cowboys, and Tory Temple wrote two called "Flashover" and "Heat", about two firemen. What happens with "Never Too Early: The Beginning" is the two authors combine the four characters.
I actually think this is a great idea. It's something that I've never seen before, and it's an impressive undertaking. I can't imagine what it must be like to write with a partner, and Tory and Chris have done a good job. The story and dialogue flow very nicely. It's actually like listening in on a conversation in a restaurant or at a party. Both couples have a great chemistry. Their love for each other is very relaxed and comfortable. And when it comes to sex? GAH!! Both couples are so good together! Then, when the four of them met at the Kentucky Derby, you feel that the friendship is a natural occurance. It doesn't feel forced or uncomfortable.
All of that being said, I felt that there were some holes in the plot. However, I think it's because I didn't read those four books and not because this one was written poorly. I imagine that, if I'd read the other four books (which I plan on doing) first, I'd have felt that this was perfect. It's obvious that this is the beginning of another series. There will be at least one more book. I don't feel as if I'm giving too much away if I tell you that it ended
on a cliffhanger of sorts. Cliffhangers usually make me angry, but with this story, I only felt a mild frustration because I didn't want the book to end.
I'm going to recommend this book with the provision that you should read the others first. It should all make sense then.

Fine blending of two authors' work.

I've been a fan of Chris Owens' writing for several years, beginning with "Bareback," the introduction of her characters Jake and Tor. Their committed, solid relationship has endured numerous tests and crises, and they remain my favorites in the gay romance genre. This book teams Chris up with Tory Temple and her firemen/ paramedic characters, Chance and Tucker from Oceanside, CA. From their first meeting at a horse race in Kentucky, the four men feel an immediate attraction to one another, most strongly sensed between to two more conservative, cautious partners, Jake from Arkansas and Chance from California, and between Tucker from California (with Kentucky roots,) and Tor from Arkansas. There is a lot of easy camaraderie among the four, but tension wants to creep in when they begin to question their attractions toward each others' partners. You have to believe that the dissimilarities between each pair of partners makes up a strong part of their bond, but a hint of insecurity causes them to question whether two similar personalities would be more compatible with one another. The tension becomes most apparent when one of the four suffers a severe injury, and the developing bond between him and one of the others (no spoiler alert here!) teases us with a promise to explore in the next installment. The characters are all well developed and easy to fall for, and you may well find yourself genuinely concerned with the story's outcome. Overall, there is more story and communication, and less explicit sex than in Jake and Tor's original book, "Bareback." That book formed a lasting connection for me with these two men, and I have eagerly sought out anything else written about them. I haven't been disappointed yet.

A story I can believe

I've heard on a lot of boards and stuff that people didn't know what this book would be like. Chris Owens's Bareback was a lot of people's first M/M book and it's a classic! Seriously, if you haven't read it, you should. Also Tory Temple's firemen are popular. Bringing them together caused a lot of people to be unsure, but I'm telling you, this was done in a different way than what I thought. Since there are supposed to be more in the series, it has possibility to progress deeper in the next book. I think that's probably where it is going, but I'm okay with it!
I've missed Jake and Tor so first of all it was a nice early Christmas present to read about them again. They're pretty solid in their relationship at the beginning of this book. Chance and Tucker are similar to Jake and Tor but they're not mirror images of each other. They play off each other in a good way. The friendship that forms between the four of them is very realistic. For those who are worried, there is NO sex between the four of them in this book! Each established couple, yes. (And it's hot.) I can't say for future books, but for now there is only friendship. Everything is out in the open, there are no secrets, no cheating, nothing like that. The authors are bringing this story in a direction that I can believe in, and for that I say thank you.
