How can a book make anyone happy? Well

I received a copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley for a fair and honest review.

Life's little cruelties sometimes makes me bitter and sarcastic, so when I saw the title of this book I, of course, laughed. My inner-cynic thought it was a huge joke. How can a book make anyone happy? Well, inner-cynic, lots of books have made us happy in the past, though most of them were fiction. Still, because I do have a soft spot for self-improvement, I wanted to give it a fair shake. If it was too hokey after the first twenty-five pages (about 1/6th of the book,) I could always decide not to finish reading it.

The thing is, it wasn't hokey. It had some moments that made me snort, but for the most part the authors strategies were sound. You're not going to get happy just from reading this book. The authors tell you right up front you're going to have to work at it. There is no magic wand, or some spell you can utter while waving your hands to make all the unhappiness go away. You have to do the work. You have to want to make the changes. And I do.

This is a book I will go back to more than once. There are exercises in each chapter, some of which include mind-mapping and journaling as you assess your emotional responses and general mood. I expected them to be silly, but they weren't. Taking time out to look at your life, your daily activities, the pleasure (or displeasure,) they bring you. Learning to incorporate things into your day that bring you pleasure. They talked about strategies for changing the way we react to situations by changing the way we think. Some of the examples they provided really hit home, reminding me of responses I'd had to similar situations. Because the thing is, once you've started a pattern of negative thought, it's really hard to break, but it can be broken.

It's worth it to me to work on improving the quality of my life, so if you're feeling unhappy I definitely recommend giving this book a try.

My devoted Secretary, Ms. Ingrid Palmer, who has worked dilligently by my side for almost two decades, suggested I write a book about my life.  I dismissed the idea.  She, along with several people close to me persisted and  finally convinced me the story of my life may benefit others.  IF my story proves to be an inspiration to young people to dream, to set goals, and to work to make their dreams a reality, then I will consider my efforts in giving a brief insight into my life, my successes and my failures to be a project worthwhile.Writing this book brought back a flood of memories of my experiences and I have included the euphoria I felt in achieving my goals, the sorrow and pain I felt during certain incidents involving my immediate family, and the depression experienced when I failed.I have lived over nine decades with one driving thought; "DON'T QUIT!" This I learned through a Poem by an unknown author, given to me by theDean of Boys at Lafayette High School, Buffalo, NY.  Thank you, Dr. Mellon.For all who read these pages, I hope you enjoy and take away a solid form of inspiration to achieve your own goals.  Be honest, be truthful and "DON'T QUIT!"Thank you,Dr. Joseph P. About the Author
DR. JOSEPH P. D'ANGELO was born on 01 October 1921 in Buffalo, New York to Italian Immigrate Parents.  Growing up, witnessing the crash of the financial markets, the implementation of "Prohibition", and then the devastating "Great Depression".  He could have chosen a life of crime, even become a Soldier in the Western New York Mafia as were several of his relatives.  However, through his Dad & Mom's dertmination, encouragement and inspiration, he chose to become a Piano player, Composer, Music Arranger, served his country in WWII, then worked his way through college, Medical & Dental Schools.  He became a renowned Maxillofacial Surgeon.  He founded his own Dental Specialty Hospital in Buffalo, Having developed an unquenchable thirst for knowledge while watching his Dad, he became a Scientist, and Explorer, Corporate Executive, Horserace Owner and Humanitarian.  Recognized by Pope John II, he was knighted into the Knights of Malta, Order of St. John, in Vatican City, Italy in 1992.  He has accomplished all this in just the first Ninety-four years of his life.An unassuming, self-efacing man, Dr. D'Angelo now adds the title "Author" to his accomplishments."My Life - My Way" is a brief insight to the incredible life of this amazing man.  It will provide the reader with inspiration to set your goals, dream your dreams and make them become a reality.

About the Author
Diane Larsen-Freeman is Professor Emerita of Education, Professor Emerita of Linguistics, and Former Director of the English Language Institute at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She is also a Distinguished Senior Faculty Fellow at the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont. Dr. Larsen-Freeman has been a conference speaker in over 60 countries of the world and has published over 100 articles in her areas of interest. Her Heinle/Cengage titles include "The Grammar Book: Form, Meaning, and Use for English Language Teachers" (third edition, 2015, co-authored with Marianne Celce-Murcia), "From Grammar to Grammaring" (2003, authored), and the fourth edition of "Grammar Dimensions: Form, Meaning, and Use" (2007, Series Director). From 1980-1985, Dr. Larsen-Freeman was Editor of the journal "Language Learning." In 1997, Dr. Larsen-Freeman was inducted into the Vermont Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 1999, she was selected by ESL Magazine as one of "the ESL pioneers." In 2000, she received the lifetime achievement award from Heinle & Heinle.

Dr. Stoner earned his bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees from Florida State University. An award-winning scholar and teacher, he has authored eight books and numerous academic articles. His most recent books are A Life in Balance: Finding Meaning in a Chaotic World and The Adversity Challenge: How Successful Leaders Bounce Back from Setbacks. A dynamic and engaging speaker and facilitator, Dr. Stoner works with a variety of businesses and organizations throughout the country, specializing in leadership, interpersonal dynamics, and change, as well as leader coaching for personal growth and reinvention.

Jason S. Stoner is Assistant Professor of Management at Ohio University. Dr. Stoner earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Bradley University and his Ph.D. from Florida State University. His research interests primarily focus on individual differences influencing reactions to workplace stressors. Dr. Stoner’s research has been published in Human Relations, Human Resource Management Review, Leadership Quarterly, Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, and Journal of Vocational Behavior.
