Opening salvo top notch Science Fiction series

First, this does not read like a translation. Ken Liu's translation of Cixin Liu's original Chinese language novel, "San ti" (2008) comes across seamlessly in the spare, translated English prose (though I cannot speak as to the authenticity of the translation, rather, just the style). Ken Liu sprinkles footnotes throughout the novel giving some useful background with regards to the Chinese Cultural Revolution of the 1960's and 1970's, as well as background in math and physics.

The plot's political and scientific setting reminded me quite a bit of the writing of Gregory Benford, specifically, his novel Timescape. If I were to hazard a guess, if you like Benford's writing, you'll enjoy this novel. If you dislike Benford (he isn't everyone's cup of tea) you might want to pass on this. This is very much hard core, traditional science fiction. The backdrop of China's Cultural Revolution gives a memorable setting. Cixin Liu's personal experiences as a Chinese citizen (a young child - he was born in 1963) lends a degree of authenticity to that aspect of the novel.

Please, please, please read at least to the halfway point. Mr. Liu's plot slowly and steadily increases the pace. I loved the entire book, but one fellow reader was going "meh" until she read enough to tell me SHE wants to read the entire series now. If you find yourself thinking, "What's the big deal" just keep on going. This is a FUN read!

Note that this is the first of an original trilogy by the author, and I'm hooked. Try to avoid reviews that give too much of the plot away and just enjoy the work. Having never read this author before, I can see why he is one of the best selling science fiction writers in China. With this series I think he's about to widen his audience.

UPDATE: I read this book again and it has led me to preorder the next in the trilogy, The Dark Forest, which doesn't even come out in English until some time in 2015.

Science Fiction that Relies Heavily on Physics

Ye Wenjie, a young astrophysicist, suffered during the Chinese Cultural Revolution seeing her physicist father killed by an out of control group of young students. For awhile she buries herself in the forests as part of the Construction Corps, sawing down irreplaceable old trees. This experience like the Cultural Revolution convinces Ye Wenjie that humanity is not redeemable.

Her father's past as a famous physicist follows her into the Construction Corps. Before she is convicted, she's whisked away to a remote antenna station to serve as a technician. She intends to spend the rest of her life there, but events push her into the forefront of a new revolution, one to discredit science.

The book moves back and forth between Ye Wenjie's experiences and Wang Maio's. Wang is an applied physicist working on nanomaterial. He is drawn into the investigation of why so many famous scientists are committing suicide. At first he doesn't see how he fits the mold, but as the investigation progresses he gets caught up in the three body problem.

This is one of the best science fiction books I have ever read. The background relies heavily on physics which makes it fascinating. The author does an excellent job of weaving real concepts into his story. If you enjoy physics, this is a must read.

Wang and Ye are good characters. Wang grows as he faces the looming catastrophe. Ye is an enclosed woman who hides deep secrets. However, my favorite character was Da Shi. Unlike the scientists, he is a pragmatic observer who doesn't worry about theory. He looks at life. His common sense is one of the most refreshing parts of the book.

I highly recommend this book. It's the first book in a trilogy. The other two books are not available yet. If you like reading really good science fiction, you'll love this book.

Completely spectacular and engaging

As a longtime fan of science fiction, from pulpy schlock to the deep, literary works, I was quite curious to read this Chinese book that has become a bestseller, and see how it might differ. It doesn't, really, though it is completely and totally Chinese, from well footnoted history to the language used. I particularly appreciated the translator's hard work to maintain the Chinese spirit of the book while creating something understandable for Americans.

I found this book engaging from start to finish, and could not put it down. My only regret is that the second book is not yet available.

The M-Factor

The book is written for people who have yet to be spokespeople and for those who are already talking to the press and want a refresher. Maddocks writes clearly and has lots of good tips for budding spokespeople. His thorough approach gives the reader the confidence that they can find their 'M' factor.

The books works for PR professionals to anyone interested in how to craft messages and engage with journalists.

Easy to digest advice on media for business people

Beautifully written, well-structured book on the intricacies of media engagement for business folk.

I found this book very easy and entertaining to read. The author generously shares his vast and varied insights of the media sector, garnered during his extensive experience as a well-established journalist. I was very impressed with the depth and breadth of his knowledge which is very apparent throughout the book.

The author explains how to develop a beneficial partnership with the press, based on mutual understanding, how misquotes might arise and what can be done to avoid such inaccuracies and how to liaise constructively with the press at times of crisis.

Having attended one of his media training classes, I can highly recommend the author as a top-notch media coach who goes to great lengths to deliver excellent quality and quantity of content, whilst retaining a real sense of enjoyment for participants.

Opening Your Eyes to Healing the Inside

This book is incredible. It should be read slowly and carefully, taking the time to pray and digest all the material within. I think I will read and re-read it many times. I have already bought 4 copies for other people. It is for the Christian who wants the true answers to why we continually do the stupid things we do - even though we 'know better'. It deals with relationships - all of our relationships and focuses on the most important relationship - that of a believer to his Lord. Jesus Christ's death is the answer through which all our hurts can be healed, and this book is deliberate and thorough on why that is the case. If you want to hear what God says better, find out why you eat too much or drink or have been too promiscuous, this is the book for you. If your problems are workaholism or just not getting along with your spouse, this is the book for you. If you're not quite sure why you feel that uncomfortable sensation when things are not going well and you can't explain why - this is the book for you. Too much to describe here. This is no magic formula or cult book - it is all about the laws of the world and how God set us up to work- and how to align ourselves with that.

The True Essence Of Transformation

Having enjoyed a number of seminars presented by the Sanfords, and seen the fruit of their labors in lives healed and sanctified, it was refreshing to read The Transformation Of The Inner Man. This transformation begins with accepting Christ's sacrificial atonement and is worked out in the process of maturation in the Christian walk. Accountability, maturity and responsibility are all appropriately emphasized in the context of grace and compassion for the hurting and the lost. As a mature student in a Counseling Psychology M.A. program, who has also taken courses at Vancouver, British Columbia's Regent College, I have studied the biblical application of their philosophical/psychologial reasoning and found it to be sound in every respect. The lasting change of which they speak, in contrast to humanistic approaches, is demonstrated to be truly effected only through the agency of the Holy Spirit, as God unites His will with that of the individual who is seeking true scriptural transformation. It seems tragic that, being wary of demonic imitations of The Real Thing (one example might be a 'theosophistic' approach to healing), there are those who shun the Truth of what God has given us and 'Slewfoot' has so poorly imitated. How ironic that the enemy can leave us attacking other Christians, especially those who have been so efficacious is the realm of 'cleansing and purifying one's innermost being' (I specifically mean the Sanfords in this case), when what we are called to do in this hour is build up the body of Christ. 'By their fruits you shall know them'. The fruit of the Sanford's work is holiness, purity, repentance and love as is described in the 13th chapter of the book of Corinithians. I would caution any reader to weigh each deposit by overzealous reviewers who have not personally witnessed the ministry of the Sanfords, and the fruits of their labors, close at hand. What can we do to facilitate the divine work that the Lord has been doing through the Sanfords? Refraining from quenching the Spirit is a start.

So grateful

I borrowed this book from a library about 15 years ago - maybe less. I was 40 or more years old and had read self-help books for 20 years. This was the last self-help book I read, because it was thoroughly therapeutic. The authors helped me recognize the pattern of anti-social thinking/behavior in one area of my life, the reasons for it being there, and the recognition of my anger. It was helpful to know that I could die to that old way of thinking because Christ went to the cross and paid for it before I was born. It took about 3 days to grieve the loss of the old way of thinking and on about the 4th day, to enter the new, unfamiliar freedom of right thoughts and feelings. It's been wonderful. I am so grateful.

About the Author
Harry R. Dammer, Ph.D., is professor and chair of Criminal Justice/Sociology at the University of Scranton. In addition to COMPARATIVE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEMS, he is also the author of RELIGION IN CORRECTIONS and THE OFFENDER IN THE COMMUNITY with Todd R. Clear, as well as many articles, manuals, and professional reports on a variety of criminal justice topics. A graduate of the Rutgers School of Criminal Justice, Dr. Dammer is active in numerous professional organizations, including the American Society of Criminology, the American Correctional Association, and the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences--where he served as chair of the International Section. He received two Fulbright Grants and has lectured at numerous professional conferences in Canada, South Korea, Hungary, Greece, Switzerland, Germany, England, Portugal, China, and Poland.

Jay S. Albanese, Ph.D., is a professor and criminologist in the Wilder School of Government & Public Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University. From 2002-2006, he served as chief of the International Center at the National Institute of Justice, the research arm of the U.S. Department of Justice. Dr. Albanese has written and edited 14 books and 60 articles and book chapters. Recent books include COMPARATIVE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEMS, ORGANIZED CRIME IN OUR TIMES, CRIMINAL JUSTICE, and PROFESSIONAL ETHICS IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE: BEING ETHICAL WHEN NO ONE IS LOOKING. Recent edited books include TRANSNATIONAL CRIME and COMBATING PIRACY: INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY THEFT AND FRAUD. His honors include the 2011 Gerhard Mueller Award from the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences International Section for outstanding contributions to comparative and international criminal justice, the Elske Smith Distinguished Lecturer Award from Virginia Commonwealth University, and the Scholar Award in Criminal Justice from the Virginia Social Science Association. Dr. Albanese has made keynote and invited presentations in 12 countries. A past president and fellow of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, he has served as executive director of the International Association for the Study of Organized Crime and president of the White Collar Crime Research Consortium. This book argues that in her late poems Sylvia Plath adopts a new attitude towards her art and towards technique in general. Instead of constructing the perfect hypnotic illusions of her earlier poems, she relentlessly reflects upon the artificial in fantasy; she ruthlessly criticizes the seduction of illusion, so that the spell of her earlier poetry now reappears, only deformed, unnatural, disturbing. Now the façades appear as façades, artifice as artifice, device as device; all of which brings the disturbance of the earlier poems from the underground painfully into the open air. In this respect, her late poetry can be seen as commenting on, or critiquing, her early poetry’s desire to create ideal fantasy worlds and the seductive pleasures they offer. This later, metapoetic Plath displays brilliance for isolating the machinery of clichés, images, and techniques of everyday discourse of the 50s and early 60s, the post-war mythologies and material practices that shattered and reorganized communal life. All the spaces, public and private, that we put our faith in (churches, hospitals, town centres, homes), all the relationships and institutions wherein we find comfort and stability (family, marriage, friendship, religion, education) become in Plath’s hands a collection of props, devices, and techniques: a bag of tricks. On one level, then, the pleasurable or, at least, mythic codes become unavailable, but on another level, Plath, rather than leaving her readers empty handed, provides them with a toolkit for analysing and transforming the machinery of experience.

Dispersed into the Machinery

Let me get this out of the way first. Anybody that calls David Holbrook "debilitatingly opaque" deserves our admiration. (x)

In Confessing Cultures: Politics and the Self in the Poetry of Sylvia Plath, Lisa Narbeshuber sees the poetry of Plath "working through in detail the geography of post-war society. Talking culture as machine, [Plath] traces the lines of production of mechanical brides and grooms, underscoring oppressions and looking for openings." (x) She does this by first challenging Robert Phillips inclusion of Plath amongst the Confessional Poets. The main difference between Plath and these poets such as Robert Lowell, Anne Sexton, and John Berryman is that Plath's "persona often fuses and disappears into her surroundings." (ix) This is in direct contrast to Lowell, Sexton, and Berryman whose poetry more consistently "document[s] the poet's soul." (xii)

For Narbeshuber, "Plath sustains the alien moment." (xi) As such, Plath "conflates the human and the machine, finding her way into pathways of the cultural circuitry, documenting the new ontology." (xi) In doing so, Plath's "self is dispersed into the machinery." (xi) Thus through this fusion and conflation, Plath's poetry transcends simply being about personal experiences: the poetry becomes a poetry of "cultural critique." (xii) Ultimately, Plath "directs the inner, the intimate, and the familial outward, turning the personal into a cultural confession." (xxiii)

Building on other analyses of Plath and politics (Tracy Brain and Robin Peel), in Confessing Cultures, Narbeshuber takes complete control of the subject at hand and has written a sound, solid work. She is at her best in Chapter 2, which is a close reading of "In Plaster." While not an obscure Plath poem, this kind of treatment I think is not the norm. She also examines the more canonical poems by Plath including "Lady Lazarus", "Daddy," and the bee sequence, and in doing so further supports her thesis and opens new avenues into each. This is a short book - but do not let this trick you. Lisa Narbeshuber has written succinctly and there is neither a wasted word nor an excess. The economy with which she has executed this critique mirrors, perhaps intentionally, those poems of Plath's she examines and her view of their inspiration, cohesion, and construction. As far as the book itself, it is wonderfully designed - the cover of dried poppy seed pods ("Where are your opiates, your nauseous capsules?") is lovely. There is a colophon, which is nice to see; but no index, which was sorely missed.

No theory or critical approach can encompass the whole of Plath's works (nor should it!); therefore promoting one methodology over another necessarily removes from the field of inspection a large chunk of Plath's output. Narbeshuber carefully looks at a handful of poems, but the genius of her study is that the work she does discuss is done so expertly. Critics (and/or academics) really fear biographically reading Plath's poems. Susan van Dyne, Tracy Brain, and Marsha Byrant and many others seem to want to avoid it at all costs. However, each has needed the biography at some point in their own valuable contributions to Plath studies: it is simply unavoidable. But no matter what, if you look at Plath's poems using approaches such as psychoanalysis, feminist, historical, environmental or another, the biography comes into play. It is important. It does matter. And in doing so one is not necessarily supporting either that Plath should be read biographically or her inclusion as a Confessional Poet (which as Narbeshuber has argued rightly is a bad assignation). This little digression, by the way, is not meant as anything negative about Confessing Cultures. While Narbeshuber seems to agree that "focusing too exclusively on Plath's life" can be limiting in the attempt to decipher her work; her own work - just like all books of criticism - is limiting because it does not (cannot) apply to everything Plath wrote. (xi) This is clearly one of those "Why can't we all just get along" moments! The more we examine Plath's works in an historical context, the more reliant we are on the accuracy of her biography as a means to assess.

AN EARLY BOOK REPUDIATING "ROMISH" DOCTRINES

Ralph Woodrow is the author of many other books and publications such as Great Prophecies of The Bible, "Three Days And Three Nights" Reconsidered, etc. The prospective reader of this book should be aware that Woodward has since repudiated this book (written in 1966 when he was only 27) in The Babylon Connection?, and has also reconsidered his former rejection of the Christmas celebration in Christmas Reconsidered, and his former rejection of Easter in Easter: Is It Pagan?.

He wrote in the first chapter, "We believe the pages which follow prove it was this MIXTURE that produced that system which is known today as the Roman Catholic church. We do no doubt that there are many fine, sincere, and devout Catholics. It is not our intention to ... ridicule anyone whose beliefs we may disagree with. Instead, we would hope this book will inspire all people... to forsake Babylonish doctrines and seek a return to the faith that was once delivered unto the saints." (Pg. 6)

He says, "The early Christians did not consider the cross on which Jesus died a virtuous symbol, but rather as 'the accursed tree,' a device of death and 'shame' (Heb 12:2)... They never spoke of the cross as a piece of wood one might hang from a little chain around his neck or carry in his hand as a protector or charm." (Pg. 40) He adds, "Jesus died on ONE cross---what shape was it?... the Greek word from which 'cross' is translated... simply means an upright stake or post. If the instrument on which Jesus died was no more than this, it was not a 'cross' (as such) at all! This would clearly show the folly of many types of crosses being 'Christianized.'" (Pg. 45)

He notes, "At the Easter season it is not uncommon for Christians to attend sunrise services. It is assumed that such honor Christ because he rose from the dead on Easter Sunday morning just as the sun was coming up. But the resurrection did not occur at sunrise. When Mary Magdalene came to the tomb it was yet DARK---and the tomb was already empty! On the other hand, there was a type of sunrise service that was a part of ancient sun worship... such practices, being without Scriptural example, do indicate that mixtures have been made." (Pg. 137-138)

Of the time of the Inquisition, he observes, "Some of the popes that today are acclaimed as 'great' lived and thrived during those days. Why didn't they open the dungeon doors and quench the murderous fires that blackened the skies of Europe for centuries? ... the Inquisition was ordered by papal decree and confirmed by pope after pope! Can any believe that such actions were representative of Him who said to turn the cheek, to forgive our enemies, and to do good to them that despitefully use us?" (Pg. 101)

He argues, "It is generally acknowledged that December 25th was not the actual date on which Jesus was born and that many of today's Christian customs stem from pre-Christian origins. Does this mean, then, that Christians must refuse to share meals with family and friends during the season? Should one's mission in life be an anti-Christmas crusade? Right or wrong, Christmas is a firmly established day in our calendar and, all things considered, it is evident that there are many causes more fruitful than counterproductive attempts to do away with it... If Christians were to take such actions as ... pulling their children out of school during the Christmas season---lest they take part in programs or plays---they would unwittingly place themselves on the same side as the atheists! A fanatical opposition to Christmas can cause unnecessary hurt among family and friends... an avoidance of extremes, is in order." (Pg. 145)

Woodrow is a creative Bible teacher, and is not afraid of controversy. But the reader should read OTHERS of his many books, and not just this one early book, to gain a more correct perspective.

A Great series of biographies

This is an excellent series of biographies for children. Full of interesting facts, easy and enjoyable to read, and great for whetting the appetite to read further. It is just a pity that there isn't a UK equivalent series, I can think of lots more people that it would be nice to read about. The whole format is very attractive and the books bring the people to life. My grandchildren, ranging fro 8 to 11 all love them, and so do I !!!

The book not only teaches but also traps the reader. It gives kids a big picture of Newton's discoveries and of his time. I highly recommend it.
