The collection is not afraid to provide glimpses of how poorly America has treated some of its immigrants and paints an accurate depiction of how these immigrants found their experience in America upon entry.

Because of its diverse collection of stories, no stone is left unturned. I would highly recommend this text to teachers and students alike, as well as those seeking to understand the "salad" that is America.

About the Author

Lynn Quitman Troyka, Adjunct Professor of English in the MA Program in Language and Literature at the City College (CCNY) of the City University of New York (CUNY), taught freshman English and basic writing for many years at Queensborough Community College. Dr. Troyka is a past chair of the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC); the College Section of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE); and the Writing Division of the Modern Language Association (MLA). She has won many awards for teaching, scholarship, and service, and has conducted hundreds of faculty workshops about teaching writing and its relation to college-level reading.
“This information,” says Dr. Troyka, “tells what I’ve done, not who I am. I am a teacher. Teaching is my life’s work, and I love it.”

 

Doug Hesse is Professor of English and Executive Director of Writing at the University of Denver, one of only thirty writing programs to receive the CCCC Certificate of Excellence. Dr. Hesse is a past chair of the CCCC, the nation’s largest association of college writing instructors. A past president, as well, of the Council of Writing Program Administrators (WPA), Dr. Hesse edited WPA: Writing Program Administration. He has served on the NCTE executive committee, chaired the MLA Division on Teaching as a Profession, and served on the MLA Committee on Contingent Labor.  Author of nearly sixty articles and book chapters, he has been named University Distinguished Scholar at the University of Denver.
 “Of various awards I’ve received,” says Dr. Hesse, “the one that matters most is Distinguished Humanities Teacher. That one came from my students and suggests that, in however small a way, I’ve mattered in their education and lives.”

You Will Need This!!

This is by far one of the best text books I've had to get so far. I didn't get it right away, but then I caved after a couple semesters and I am REALLY glad that I did. I'm usually really great with essays, but when I get stumped, this book tells me exactly what I need to do to get it right. It tells you everything you need to know about writing any kind of essay, and has a GREAT section covering that pesky MLA formatting that is oh-so-popular these days. If you follow the guidelines in this book when you're working on essays, you're sure to make the grade!

was not the exact book. Did not include the new mycomputer lab as advertised. Kept the book and got dollars off the price due to the fact may have to buy another book / the correct one/ next semister.

Great book for advanced understanding

If you're looking for a thermodynamics book that gives you brief yet profound understanding of the concept without resorting to fancy computerized illustration, this is the book that you might want to have.

It covers almost any aspect of thermodynamics (Onsager's irreversible thermodynamics, the condition for stable/meta-stable equilibrium, etc)

The only shortcoming is that one needs a basic or intermediate background to read this. It's highly recommended for senior undergrad or graduate student.

An impressive rational treatment of thermodynamics

This is a text most suited for a second course of thermodynamics or for graduate students. Its treatment of thermodynamics is much more rational and structured than most college thermodynamics texts. The authors reduce the postulates of thermodynamics to two basic principles, and derive the 0th to 2nd laws from them, as well as the state principle and even Newton's 2nd law. They go on to present basic thermodynamic principles generally following Caratheodory's approach. One major drawback of this book is, of course, its price. However, for libraries in technical colleges and universities, this book is a must.

The most beautiful thermodynamics book ever written

This textbook was passed onto me by my previous supervisor.

I have always been looking for a thermo book that is exactly like that. Every concept is self-contained, and presented formally (mathematically and verbally) and succinctly. More impotantly, with this book I can teach these concepts myself, and can be referred to *quickly* in the future. It is both a beautiful textbook, and a handy reference book.

Historically, the evolution of human understanding on the subject of heat and thermodynamics was best described as "a big mess". This book finally brought (almost) absolute order.

Indeed, it is sad to see that this book is not really in print, and is very expensive (new). I am very fortunate to have my hand on it.

It really does have everything you need to interpret a chart!!

Ms. Herring's writing style is full of imagery and clarity with ideas presented in simplicity. Astrology can be confusing and arduous, but this book makes it easy. For example, "Taurus is symbolized by the bull, which tends to conjure cartoon images of a great beast charging down a little man holding a red cloth, but most of the time the raging bull is simply a cow, content to graze where it stands" p. 109. I love the imagery as it sets a tone that most astrology books do not. She also supplies clear keywords and definitions that are simply put. The structure of the book makes a lot of sense as it discusses each piece of astrology in an orderly manner that can build as one progresses through the material, or can be studied on its own. Ms. Herring begins with a history of astrology moving on to an explanation of the differences between astrology and astronomy, how to read a chart map, the meanings of angles and glyphs used. Then she proceeds through the planets, signs, houses, aspects and how to spot them, moon nodes, chart interpretation techniques and more. This book really has everything you could need to learn and interpret astrology.

As a bumbling novice to astrology, I can say this book is both informative and intriguing in a format that is easy to follow and very enjoyable to read. Amy Herring has a wonderful way with words and presents the topic of astrology in an accessible manner that invites the reader to explore. I found myself first flipping to the sections I knew to be "my sign"... but then realized there was so much more. This book gives the tools to get into the layers of one's chart with the author's skilled assistance. Fascinating and fun!!
