A Great Guide to Aging

After seeing numerous people go through their senior years with a scowl on their face and a whiny attitude toward life, I recommend this book as an antidote for anyone who wants to avoid becoming a grumpy old man (or woman). The subtitle says it all: “Your Mind, Body, and Spirit Guide to Aging with Grace and Confidence.” Dr. Kara Davis forthrightly addresses such relevant topics as preparing living wills and health care directives, the sexual realities of aging, caring for your body, and dealing with depression and anxiety. She also points out the way you treat loved ones and friends today will determine the emotional and practical support you enjoy tomorrow. For those who are members of a church, she outlines ways that older members can dampen the atmosphere, such as looking down on anyone younger (especially a pastor) and refusing to give up cherished traditions more rooted in personal preference than scripture. All in all, an edifying, uplifting book that you will want to keep around for ready reference for years to come.

About the Author
Roch Carrier is Canada’s National Librarian and the beloved author of many Canadian classics for both adults and children. In 1968 he published his hugely successful novel, La Guerre, Yes Sir!. He has written many novels, short stories, plays, film and television scripts, essays, travel books, and poetry. Several of his works have become classics and are used in schools and universities around the world. His much-loved children's story, The Hockey Sweater, remains a timeless favorite. In 1991, Roch Carrier was awarded the Stephen Leacock Award for Humour for Prayers of a Very Wise Child. Among his many other awards and honors, Mr. Carrier is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, an Officer of the Order of Canada, and the holder of many honorary doctorates. All this from the boy who grew up in a village with no library and no books. Now the village has a brand new library – the Roch Carrier Library.

An adorable little French-Canadian book!

This book was adorable, and the French was not hard to follow-which is great for someone who is learning like me. I picked this up as it was required for a French class (French 2020: Intermediate French 2) but the class got canceled and I decided to keep the book because it's adorable and was fun to read even on my own.

En fait, tous les garçons voulaient être Maurice Richard. Chacun d'eux portait fièrement le chandail bleu-blanc-rouge des Canadiens de Montréal arborant, comme un blason, le fameux numéro 9 du Rocket.

Mais un jour, le chandail du jeune Roch est devenu trop petit et trop usé pour qu'il puisse le porter. Sa mère lui en commande un nouveau dans le catalogue de la compagnie Eaton à Montréal. Lorsque le colis tant attendu arrive enfin, c'est la catastrophe ! Au lieu d'un chandail des Canadiens de Montréal, la compagnie Eaton lui a envoyé - quelle horreur ! - un chandail de l'équipe méprisée des Maple Leafs de Toronto. La mère de Roch l'oblige à le porter, car il lui fait très bien, et Monsieur Eaton serait sûrement très offensé qu'on le retourne.

Ce classique de la littérature canadienne de Roch Carrier passionne les enfants de tous âges, qu'ils aient ou non déjà joué au hockey. Le livre s'inspire d'une nouvelle originale, qui a fait l'objet d'un court métrage d'animation.

When Carrier's Montreal Canadiens hockey sweater wears out, his mother writes to Eaton's to order a new one. Unfortunately, the company ships a sweater from the Canadiens' bitter rivals, the Toronto Maple Leafs. Carrier does not want to wear the new sweater, but his mother refuses to let him wear the old worn out sweater, and does not want to return the new sweater for fear of offending Mr. Eaton and it fits so well, unaware that the company would have been happy to exchange it. As a result, he is forced to wear the Leafs sweater to his hockey game, where all the other players on the ice are wearing Canadiens sweaters.

The story is widely considered an allegory for the linguistic and cultural tensions between anglophone and francophone Canadians, and an essential classic of Canadian literature. An excerpt from the story is now also commemorated in both official languages of Canada on the back of the Canadian five-dollar bill.

Kelly J. If you searched for this book using the ISBN number, check carefully to make sure you want the "shorter edition." I had shipping issues and by the time this book finally arrived, it wasn't the full 11th edition. I don't know why this pops up when the ISBN number is used to search for it, because they have different ISBN numbers entirely. It did not include some of the pieces I needed to complete assignments, and the pieces I did use were in completely different spots than my syllabus said (due to being a different book altogether). Frustrating.

Be Careful

There are 3 versions of this edition. Full, Shorter and Portable. Full being longest and most expensive and portable being the shortest, make sure you are purchasing the correct one.

Buyer Beware!

This is horrible. They say that this is the same edition. It is not. Amazon has lied to me and robbed me of 30 bucks for renting this. This is a complete fabrication of what it actually contains. It is not the same book even though it comes up. Be sure that they request the portable edition of this book instead of just the regular 11th edition.

Maybe the single most useful Cambridge Music Handbook yet

Anthony Poole's study of Berg's violin concerto is one of the standouts of the Cambridge Music Handbooks series, exploring every facet of the work and giving a vivid picture of the society in which the book was written. If you love Berg's quirky yet moving masterpiece, or are trying to understand what all the fuss is about, this is a vital book to have. Note, however, that one must also have a copy of the score to fully use this handbook, as Poole makes frequent reference to rehearsal numbers.

Poole's work consists of four parts. In the first, Poole presents the music scene of the 1930s, paying especial attention to the style of allusion used by Stravinsky et al. and the conservatism of Rachmaninoff and even some of Schoenberg's American works. Berg, writes Poole, elegantly balanced between the competing musical philosophies of the time. The second part of the book takes up this theme, showing the breakthroughs Berg made in the works written up to the violin concerto, such as the Three Orchestral Pieces, the "Lyric Suite", and parts of "Lulu".

Yet it is the latter half of the book that will be most fascinating to many readers, getting as they do to the violin concerto itself. In the third part, Poole tracks the composition of the work, explaining how it was partially inspired by the death of Manon Gropius. A big bombshell is that parts of the work are inspired by a bawdy Carinthian folk song; a work often seen as of angelic purity (dedicated as it is "to the memory of an angel") has a rather risque subtext. Poole also mentions Berg's fathering of an illegitimate child by a servant girl in his boyhood home, memories of which, which he says, leave meaningful traces in the work.

The next two chapters form the musicological analysis of the work. Some of it is accessible to everyone. For example, he goes step by step through the various portions of the concerto. The two movements break nicely into two sections each, and each section has several distinct parts of its own. Poole helps the reader follow these developments in a way that greatly enhances appreciation of the concerto. The discussion of tonality in the work, however, supposes some knowledge of music theory, and makes heavy use of Schenkerian/Neo-Schenkerian theory. Poole reveals the work to be much more traditional than is often let on--which, incidentally, vindicates Boulez, who over fifty years ago famously dismissed Berg as too bound by early notions of form and tonality. The final chapter of the work talks about the critical reception that the concerto met.

An admirable handbook, and much more successful than most entries in the CMH series.

An outstanding guide to a complex piece of music.

This book covers almost everything you could want to know about this concerto, which is difficult but full of powerful emotion. It explains the commission, the performance history, the program, and the tonality. I wish the book had more short musical examples in the program section, but that is a small caveat. The discussion of tonality is much clearer than in the other works I have read on this concerto.

Phil Taylor (London) has been working for Pink Floyd continuously since he was 22 years of age. In 1974 he was employed by Pink Floyd to take care of the band's personal equipment used on stage and in the studio. He has worked on every Pink Floyd and David Gilmour project for over three decades.

Great historical restrospective, lacking in technical detail...

I bought the book and promptly read it cover to cover (what self respecting Pink Floyd/David Gilmour fan wouldn't ;>) ).

Like many others have commented, the book is a great historical retrospective (although Phil arrived on the scene post Dark Side) but it lacks many of the technical details that most guitarists are likely hoping for. Nevertheless, it is definitely worth buying!

Perhaps Phil (and David) will publish a follow-on work containing technical details on the guitars, effects, amps, and sound sculpting techniques that are employed to make that unique music we have all come to love...

Excellent book for the guitar enthusiast

I bought this book for my 17 year old son as a gift. I am nowhere near the guitar nut as he is, but this book is absolutely beautiful. Wonderful to thumb through and browse. The photos are brilliant and the story amazing. This is a huge book and very well written. You won't be sorry for buying this book, I would recommend it for anyone who has a love for guitars, Pink Floyd, or rock music in general. Perfect 5 stars.
