Essentially an updating of Dale Carnegie's enormously successful books of the 1930s and '40s ( How to Win Friends and Influence People has thus far sold 30 million copies), this book adds little new material. The major difference is that this effort is more unabashedly focused on influencing people in order to make money, which is logical since the book is aimed at business people. Carnegie's rules are reiterated: be euphoric if you can and, if you can't, at least don't be negative; respect others and try to make them feel praiseworthy and deserving of recognition; listening is just as important as talking, perhaps more so. Business people are advised that they can be leaders if they realize that the pyramidal structure of the corporation is being replaced by teamwork; and if they set goals and keep them constantly in mind, business people have a good chance of realizing their objectives. Thus, while Levine, CEO of Dale Carnegie, and Crom, a vice-president of the firm, offer little that's original, one senses that sales will be excellent.

Disappointing... it is a simple rehash

Having twice completed the original "How to Win Friends and Influence People", I found 75% of this is a rehash. The other 25% was mostly modern anecdotes that support the original author's theories. I found little original material.

The Leader in You just takes the issues pointed out at How to Win Friends and Influence People and gives more updated examples related to the business world.
I really doens't add much value if you have read How to Win Friends... which, by the way, is much more fun and is better written.

Poor Rewrite of "How to Win Friends and Influence People"

This is a re-write of Dale Carnegie's "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Stuart Levin, the CEO of Dale Carnegie and Associates, Inc. Unfortunately, the new book is an empty shell of the original -- it's already dated, although it was published in 1993, while the original, first published in the 1930's, is as fresh and as relevant as it was the day it was first printed. Recommend skipping this lesser imitation and sticking with the original.

Vogel and Giarra show that close personal relationships, mutual trust, and a common purpose can foster flexible, fast, and fruitful negotiations.

Each case study explains the cultural as well as political, institutional, and personal factors and assesses their influence. A concluding chapter draws out common threads from the four studies, suggests how U.S. negotiators can maximize negotiating efficacy, and points the way toward a new and clearer understanding of Japanese bargaining behavior.

Themes in Japanses Negotiating Behavior

Case Studies in Japanese Negotiating Behavior provided historical examples between Japan and the United States, highlighting consistent behaviors across each situation. The first two cases focuses on trade issues, including the Negotiation of Orange Imports and Negotiations on Rice Imports. The third and fourth cases focused on security issues, which featured the FSX Aircraft Negotiations and the Renegotiation of the Security Relationship. Within these cases, the Japanese style and approach to negotiation was rooted in the significant influence of the culture. The Japanese process was very methodical, including consensus building, reactive and defensive style, and managing perceptions during the negotiation.

I enjoyed this book because of the approach of including four diverse cases, and the authors drawing connections between each of the examples for a deeper understanding of the behavior of the Japanese. I was struck by how transparent the cultural norms of Japan were in the communication and negotiation approach, which reaffirmed the need for understanding of other countries by preparing in advance to understand the opposing side.

While the introduction of the book did clarify that the Japanese Negotiating Behavior studied only encompassed cases with the United States, I was disappointed that there weren't other examples included. There were many international scenarios between the two countries and both demonstrate distinct and opposite styles, so this analysis benefitted from being focused and clear--but left the reader wondering how the Japanese behaviors played out in other negotiations without such a strong relationship and significant difference in positions of power.

Mike Blaker - A God among Japanese-American Business Deals

I just picked this book up yesterday and haven't been able to put it down. The 170 pages fly by like nothing and make you eager to read more. The depth and style Dr. Blaker uses to express his views is simply awe-inspiring. I've dealt with big businesses in Japan for many years now, and everything I read in the book is true and then some. It has made me rethink my whole strategy in ways I previously never thought possible. I HIGHLY recommend this fascinating insight into Japanese negotions, I simply can not stress this enough.

Good basis for Japanese negotiating style

The book focuses on four government level negotiations between the U.S. and Japan. Through these cases the reader can get a feel for how the Japanese negotiate, even though the scope is very limited. The authors show that Japan does have a distinctive style of negotiation and that it is different than other countries. To get a more detailed look at the Japanese negotiation style, readers should do further research, which can pick up nuances that would vary from government level negotiations and ideally identify commercial or personal negotiation styles of the Japanese.

OPC UA unifies the previous specifications into one single address space capable of dealing with current data, alarms and events and the history of current data as well as the event history. A remarkable enhancement of OPC UA is the Address Space Model by which v- dors can expose a rich and extensible information model using object-oriented techniques. OPC UA scales well from intelligent devices, controllers, DCS, and SCADA systems up to MES and ERP systems. It also scales well in its ability to provide information; on the lower end, a model similar to Classic OPC can be used, providing only base information, while at the upper end, highly sophisticated models can be described, providing a large amount of metadata including complex type hierarchies.

Good OPC UA Introduction. English could be better.

The best comments I can make about this book can be taken from the book itself:

From the Preface: The [OPC UA] specification primarily defines how to do things and to a lesser extent explains why it was designed that way. This is the way specifications have to be written to be widely applied by many developers and to guarantee interoperability between different applications. As a result, the OPC UA specification is hard to read for someone new to OPC UA. This is also true for other specifications such as SQL or UML. With this book, we want to fill this gap and provide an easy to understand introduction to OPC UA. We will not provide the same detail as the specification, but rather introduce and explain the main concepts of OPC UA.

Not bad.

I was almost tempted to give it five stars. Not that it's a perfectly five-star book, but considering that there's literally nothing else on OPC, it's good enough to get high ratings.

The book covers UA OPC on the conceptual level pretty extensively and clearly, and considering the fact that the specs for this purportedly "open" standard are not freely accessible (the corporate take on the word "open", I guess), this is the book to go to if you work with OPC.

I agree with the other reviewers that the book is under-proofread, but the problems are not so bad as to impede comprehension.

I also notice that the price just went up twenty percent overnight -- don't you wish something like this happened to your salary? I bought it less than a month ago for about forty-seven, now it's about fifty-seven. On one hand, as far as prices for this sort of literature go it's not that bad, but for christ's sakes, publishers appear to have lost their minds in the last couple of years. How can you jack up something twenty percent overnight? Is it their way to maintain income during bad economy? Get the book in the library or at least get your employer to pay for it. Naturally search the net for best prices.

Overall, if you need OPC, you have no other choices, and this one (amazingly) is totally adequate for a comprehensive conceptual overview. This is rarely the case: usually esoterica like that are either completely uncovered or covered exceptionally badly. This book is not bad though; I feel no remorse giving it four stars.

It was okay

This was just okay. I liked that this involved a pretty unique shifter but other than a crazy ex-boyfriend him being rare was never really an issue. This book was more about his inability to believe that people could be genuine friends and want him for him and no other reason. I enjoyed the story but there was just something lacking.

About the Author
Dr. Urmila Sharma, M.A., Ph.D., daughter of renowned Indian Political Scientist Dr. B.M. Sharma stood first in B.A. in Ist Division at Mahila College in 1956; she stood first in first division in M.A. (Political Science) in 1958 receiving highest marks in all the faculties of Lucknow University and was awarded four gold medals. During 1958-59 she was lecturer in P.G. Department of Political Science at R.G. College, Meerut. During 1959-1962, she received U.G.C. Research Fellowship. Since then she has been continuously engaged in research and writing. In 1980, she received her Ph.D degree on now published work Humanism in Contemporary Indian Political Thought. She is the author of many books on Political Science in both English and Hindi.

Dr. S.K. Sharma, M.A. (History), M.A. (Pol.Sc.), LLB., Ph.D. (London), taught Political Science to under-graduate and post-graduate students for three decades and retired as Head of the Department of Political Science, Meerut College, Meerut. Author of about fifty research papers Dr. Sharma guided Ph.D. research and attended numerous seminars in India and abroad. He obtained Ph.D. degree from London University on his now published work on Harold Laski.
