The exposition is well-organised and fairly complete with all the necessary details, yet still readable and understandable for those with a limited mathematical background, say at the Calculus level or just below that. The present book, with its many citations from the literature, will be of interest to anyone concerned with the history or foundations of mathematics.

This is a very nice short treatment of various applications of the binomial theorem. The author does an excellent job of balancing mathematical complexity and conversational tone. This is not a "history of mathematics" book, nor is it a text book. It is a walk through different ways the binomial theorem can be used in practice. It includes computer/calculator examples and programs that can be used to explore the different applications, such as calculating roots of numbers. It omits probability and statistics applications, as these topics are covered in the author's other book on the subject.

This is a great little book, although it isn't little. It has 60 pages of pre-Newton and 200 more on Newton's work and all its repercussions. Both a history and a tutorial, it is thorough and thoroughly readable. Recommended for anyone with a fixation on the subject.

This is a great book. It is well organized and detailed on how to start recruiting. It's great for a first time beginner like myself. I have read the Headhunting housewife which does not compare to this book. I would recommend this book for busines programs that have courses on recruitment. Even if you are an experienced recruiter, I think this book would be helpful to you too. There are sections where it acknowledges the challenges in recruiting and it validates your struggles, which is encouraging to me.
I am a new recruiter and am glad for reading this book because it really teaches me the steps to take in getting new clients and how to make those cold calls. There are guided scripts on what to say for various situations. This will help new recruiters who are starting out, on how to handle clients who are not interested. In addition, this book has steps on how to find clients and candidates appropriately. I wish I had bought this book first, it would have save me money. Other books do not compare to this one. Buy this book.

I'm currently an HR Generalist recruiting for the organization I work for and have been interested in executive recruiting for about 4 years now. These interdisciplinary events were dedicated to dialogue and cross-contamination between traditional concepts of speculatio, present-minded premodern studies, and contemporary speculative realist and object-oriented philosophies. In its medieval formulation, speculatio signifies the essentially reflective and imaginative operations of the intellect. Here the world, books, and mind itself are all conceived as specula (mirrors) through which the hermeneutic gaze can gain access to what lies beyond it. “To know is to bend over a mirror where the world is reflected, to descry images reflected from sphere to sphere: the medieval man was always before a mirror, both when he looked around himself and when he surrendered to his own imagination” (Giorgio Agamben, Stanzas). Correlatively, speculative realism, as the term suggests, is characterized by the self-contradictory intensity of a desire for thought that can think beyond itself — a desire that proceeds, like all philosophy, in a twisted and productive relation to the phantasm of the word. Aiming to rise above and tunnel below the thought-being or self-world correlation, speculative realism “depart[s] from the text-centered hermeneutic models of the past and engage[s] in daring speculations about the nature of reality itself” (The Speculative Turn). Speculative Medievalisms, like some weird friar-alchemist in an inexistent romance, plays the erotic go-between for these text-centered and text-eccentric intellectual domains by trying to transmute the space between past and present modes of speculation from shared blindness to love at first sight. About the Author
Eileen A. Joy teaches at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and her main interests are in Old English literature, cultural studies, embodied affectivities, ethics, and the post/human. She is the founder and co-editor of postmedieval: a journal of medieval cultural studies and the Lead Ingenitor of the BABEL Working Group. She is also the co-editor of The Postmodern Beowulf (West Virginia University Press, 2007) and Cultural Studies of the Modern Middle Ages (Palgrave, 2007). Anna Klosowska is Associate Professor of French at Miami University, editor of Madeleine de l’Aubespine, Selected Poems and Translations (Chicago, 2007) and Queer Love in the Middle Ages (Palgrave, 2005), and editor of Violence Against Women in Medieval Texts (Florida, 1998). Author of over 20 articles on queer theory and premodern literature, she is also on the editorial board of Glossator: Practice and Theory of the Commentary. Nicola Masciandaro teaches at Brooklyn College, is the author of The Voice of the Hammer: The Meaning of Work in Middle English Literature (Notre Dame, 2006), and is also founder and co-editor of Glossator: Practice and Theory of the Commentary. He has published widely on medieval philosophy, mysticism, individuation, geophilosophy, beheading, sorrow, spontaneity, and metal music, among other subjects. Michael O’Rourke lectures in the School of Psychotherapy at Independent Colleges, Dublin, Ireland and works mostly at the intersections between Queer Theory and Continental Philosophy. He has published over forty articles and book chapters, has co-convened The(e)ories: Advanced Seminars for Queer Research since 2002, and is the series editor of the Queer Interventions book series at Ashgate Press and of the Cultural Connections: Key Thinkers and Queer Theory book series at the University of Wales Press.

The characters, whose culture and families have been lost to the forces of history, mistrust connection even as they hunger for attachment.

In exquisite prose Lan Samantha Chang weaves the forces of war and magic, food and desire, ghosts and family, into haunting tales that reveal the mysteries of the heart. Again and again, she asks the question: Is ordinary love not a kind of burden, stifling and terrifying in the choices and responsibilities it forces on us? And yet we yearn for it, suffer for it, define ourselves by our experience of it, cannot live without it.

About the Author
Lan Samantha Chang was born in Wisconsin in 1966. A graduate of the Kennedy School of Public Government, she has since embarked on a writing career, attending the Iowa School of Writing and teaching at Stanford. Her stories have appeared in the best of the American Literary magazines such as The Atlantic, and in top collections such as Best American Short Stories. Inheritance is her first novel.

Intimate stories with resonant themes

"Hunger" is the opening novella and anchor for this collection of short stories. Chang is a graceful author with just the right touch of sensitivity and insight into the lives of Chinese immigrants in America. The special talent here is in the individual attention Chang gives to each family, each story. This is not a social history portrayal of the masses. While the family structures are seemingly uniform (husband and wife and one or two children) and the range of vocations unsurprising (restaurant workers, music prodigies, math and tech specialists), the characters are more emotionally dimensional than one would suspect.
*** The theme of hunger is the dramatic thread running through all the stories -- hunger for personal expression, parental acceptance or love, or independence. The immigrant experience is a poignant paradox of being closely tied to one's family or home and yet feeling the fierce need to pull away in order to succeed. The ultimate hunger becomes not one extreme or the other, but in wanting both polar opposites to work at once. It is an impossible hunger to satisfy and yet continually churning at the core of every character.

These stories are wonderful--highly recommended. Chang's sentences are gorgeous, and her observations are moving. Her characters are well-rounded and complicated, and their plights are sympathetic--the kind of characters that stay with you. The stories are a fine balance of subtlety and utter stark clarity.

Two words...Thank you! I myself am a Chinese-American girl and strive to be a writer. I have lately become more and more interested in looking into the work of Chinese-American authors, and found her book in the bookstore while trying to think of every Chinese last name I could! The book I found was the last copy they had, but I have no regrets in buying it! It's a book full of stories that really and truly capture what it's like for Chinese immigrants to come to America and find Americanized everything. To be honest, everyone loves the famous author Amy Tan...but I think Chang outdoes her in many aspects!
Her style for one is beyond Tan's. While Amy Tan writes with primitive simpleness (basically, a way that any person can write) Chang writes intelligently and intellectually. She is someone who not only wrote this story for the surface meaning of it, but there is hidden depth and philosophy.
What i liked the most, is that she didn't use the same basic Chinese stereotypes that every Chinese-American author usually uses such as the "ah"s at the end of every name, the overdone superstition of ghosts, etc. She reveals knowledge in her writing and is the first author who I have seen reveal the Chinese culture for what it REALLY is. I hope she writes more books, because I would buy them all in a heartbeat! Thank you so much. I strive to do what she has done for me! Enjoy every page of what she has written with the utmost admiration and respect.
