An insightful and detailed guide on the use of steroids and anabolics
By E.A. Gray
[[VIDEOID:6ca1aab158f491bba76d018aeb2f481c]] As an avid pursuer of proper aesthetic results and a more capable physical ability, I purchased this book in the hopes that it could illuminate me on the varying aspects of steroids and their impact on my body's growth. From the beginning it was obvious that the author was an authority on the subject; his descriptions are well described and without complications or fluff. I thoroughly enjoyed the introductory writing and found the information on the negative feedback loop and side effect descriptions very enlightening. Also, the information on injections and syringes was indispensable. Just reading those first few pages provided me elucidating information that has increased my knowledge on steroids exponentially.

From there, the author breaks down the different types of steroids, hormones, and anabolics that are readily on the market. He succinctly describes the benefits, details, and possible downsides of each option in a way that provided me the exacting clarity that I needed in order to choose which product was best for me. The additional info on anti-estrogen items that are to be used was worth the price of the book alone: They let me know what I needed to utilize in tandem with my chosen steroid. From HCG and D-Bol all the way to insulin and the best products necessary for cutting weight, there is nothing left out of this all-inclusive guide. If you're looking to be fully informed about steroids and all the other products that coincide with it, you can't do better than this. I've no doubt that it is going to remain a reference in my personal library for a very long time to come.

Dollar per dollar
By Taraa Gaspar
Dollar per dollar, there is no better way to acquire all the vital information needed to use steroids safely and effectively. This book answers all the questions. It comprehensively covers all. It is a thorough reference guide. It was a brilliant idea to keep the book short, nice and simple. My advice to steroid users and the just curious is you will not find a cheaper and more comprehensive book on steroids. I wasted lots of money buying bad books but this one is great.

This book is very direct
By Patricia Cook
This book is very direct. Before I even got into the steroids reference part I learnt all about the whole theory and practice of steroids, for instance anabolic and androgenic effects, alcohol and steroids, negative feedback loop (particularly useful), estrogen levels, water retention, sexual overstimulation, intramuscular and intravenous, how to measure or dose, where to get your syringes, how to inject, and which ones are better.
Then you get 27 detailed steroids and bodybuilding drugs described in a very efficient manner:
- Positive effects,
- How it works,
- Pros and cons,
- How to take it,
- What dosage,
- What frequency.

Not in His Image: Gnostic Vision, Sacred Ecology, and the Future of Belief, by John Lamb Lash

Basing much of Not in His Image on the Nag Hammadi and other Gnostic writings, John Lamb Lash explains how a little-known messianic sect propelled itself into a dominant world power, systematically wiping out the great Gnostic spiritual teachers, the Druid priests, and the shamanistic healers of Europe and North Africa. They burned libraries and destroyed temples in an attempt to silence the ancient truth-tellers and keep their own secrets. But as Lash reveals, when the truth is the planet Earth it cannot be hidden or destroyed.

Not in His Image delves deeply into the shadows of ancient Gnostic writings to reconstruct the story early Christians tried to scrub from the pages of history, exploring the richness of the ancient European Pagan spirituality--the Pagan Mysteries, the Great Goddess, Gnosis, the myths of Sophia and Gaia--and chronicles the annihilation of this Pagan European culture at the hands of Christianity.

Long before the birth of Christianity, monotheism was an anomaly; Europe and the Near East flourished under the divine guidance of Sophia, the ancient goddess of wisdom. The Earth was the embodiment of Sophia and thus sacred to the people who sought fulfillment in her presence. This ancient philosophy was threatening to the emerging salvation-based creed of Christianity that was based on patriarchal dominion over the Earth and lauded personal suffering as a path to the afterlife. As Derrick Jensen points out in the afterword, in Lash's hands Jesus Christ emerges as the agent provocateur of the ruling classes.

Review

Los Angeles Times Sunday Book Review-

Gnosticism is a label applied to a collection of religious ideas that has long exerted a certain appeal to public intellectuals and controversialists, ranging from the theologian Marcion in the 2nd century AD to literary critic Harold Bloom in our time. What attracts them, I suppose, is the conviction that the highest truths are available only to a small circle of initiates -- the Greek term gnostokoi can be translated as "those who understand divine matters, knowing what the gods know."

The latest to unfurl the banner of Gnosticism is John Lamb Lash, who describes the Gnostics of the ancient world as "the elite of Pagan intellectuals" and declares that their writings are "the explosive charge that can blow the institution of the Faith off its foundations, for good and all." By "the Faith," he means the Judeo-Christian-Islamic tradition in its entirety, and he intends to do nothing less than convert his readers into latter-day Gnostics.

Lash, whose publisher describes him as "an exponent of the practice of mythology," rejects much of the contemporary scholarship on Gnosticism. For example, he dismisses the work of Princeton historian Elaine Pagels, author of The Gnostic Gospels, because she places the texts discovered at the Egyptian archeological site of Nag Hammadi within the context of early Christianity. Such an approach, he insists, "has hampered understanding of who the Gnostics were, and why they protest so vehemently against the rise of Christianity."

Lash seeks to rescue Gnosticism from the dustbin of Christian history and restore it to its rightful place amid the splendors of pagan antiquity. To signal his admiration for the fecund religious imagination of paganism, he capitalizes the word "Pagan" as if it were a single faith rather than a phantasmagorical assortment of beliefs and practices. But he does point out that Gnosticism itself shouldn't be described as a religion or even a sect, if only because gnostokos was "the generic term for any person learned in divine matters." Above all, he insists that Gnosticism represents the path toward "spiritual deep ecology," symbolized by today's adherents of the Greek earth goddess Gaia.

Not in His Image is perhaps best compared to Robert Graves' The White Goddess, an earlier and only slightly less eccentric effort to find and explain the linkages among the fantastic variety of religious experiences in the ancient world. Like Graves, Lash is a self-invented scholar who has read widely and thought deeply. (He is the author of Quest for the Zodiac, The Hero and The Seeker's Handbook, and the co-founder of metahistory.org with a former wife, Joanna Harcourt-Smith, who lived with Timothy Leary in the 1970s. And he is general executor of the estate of Jack Kerouac's daughter, Jan, to whom he also was once married.) He confidently issues pronouncements about what he calls "the wholesale genocide of Pagan culture" and prescriptions for the spiritual salvation of the world.

Lash offers this work as a corrective to the "scholarly specialization" that condemns the Gnostics to "an obscure and uncertain place on the margins of the history of religion." Along the way, he seeks to repudiate what he sees as the pigheadedness of the academic establishment. Thus, for example, he condemns biblical scholars who do not see the continuities that Lash detects between the early Christians and the religious community at Qumran. He calls them "Zaddikites," but they are better known to the lay reader as the custodians of the Dead Sea Scrolls: "They fail to realize that the message of love in the charming miracle tales of the New Testament is a sugar coating on the bitter cyanide of Zaddikite ravings."

But Lash is not concerned merely with scolding biblical scholars. His goal is to melt down the religious and philosophical ideas of antiquity and recast them as a serviceable faith for our world. In place of the Judeo-Christian-Islamic tradition, which he links to "the religious schizophrenia of the ancient Hebrews" and which he flatly condemns as "annihilation theology," he proposes that we embrace Gnosticism and what he dubs "Gaian ethics," which he describes as "not a call to faith in God, but faith in the human species."

Lash is capable of explaining the mind-bending concepts of Gnosticism and pagan mystery cults with bracing clarity and startling insight. At moments, however, he slips into a kind of New Age rant as baffling as any mystical text. "What we seek in 'Gaia theory' is a live imaginal dimension," he writes in one such passage, "not a scaffolding of cybernetic general systems cogitation." Or: "Gnosis, taken as a path of experimental mysticism, and the Sophianic vision, taken as a guiding narrative for co-evolution, can provide the spiritual dimension for deep ecology independently of the three mainstream religions derived from the Abrahamic tradition."

Even he acknowledges that his book can be "a long haul and a lot to follow" and that his line of reasoning "demands exceptional concentration from the likes of us, many of whom cannot stay in the moment for three minutes at a time."

Lash's arguments are often lively and entertaining, even when they aren't convincing. When he contends that Celtic civilization spread to the far corners of the ancient world -- "An apocryphal legend claims that John the Baptist was a Celt," he writes, "and Mary Magdalene was Circassian, half Celt, half Jewish" -- he is reduced to citing the film "Lawrence of Arabia" to support the proposition that "Celtic half-breeds survived in the Levant down into the early twentieth century."

And when he considers what he calls the "sci-fi theology" of the ancient Gnostics, he comes uncomfortably close to affirming that the otherworldly "Archons" of Gnostic myth were authentic extraterrestrials.

"It is worth noting that the first great UFO wave of the twentieth century occurred in the summer and fall of 1947 when Jean Doresse was in Cairo examining the Nag Hammadi Codices, at the very moment the first Dead Sea Scrolls were found," Lash writes. "This was also the year that the CIA was founded, with the dual intention (according to UFO conspiracy buffs) to co-opt alien technology and cut a deal with the aliens, allowing them to experiment covertly on human subjects.... In fact, a CIA agent named Miles Copeland was dispatched to Damascus to examine and photograph some of the first scroll fragments to be unearthed."

At one telling moment at the outset of his book, Lash describes how his life was transformed when, in early adolescence, he was reading a copy of Nietzsche's Thus Spake Zarathustra in the back seat of the family car on the way back from an orthodontist's appointment in upstate New York. "I swore to finish what Nietzsche had begun," he declares. "I vowed to think through and live out his critique of Christianity to the end."

With Not in His Image he keeps that vow. But when Lash invites us to embrace the "high strangeness" of what he calls the "ET/Archon" hypothesis "with the Gnostic theory of alien intrusion" -- "the stranger it gets, the more sense it makes," he insists -- he passes wholly through the looking glass.

(Jonathan Kirsch)

"John Lash's Not In His Image presents a fascinating view of meanings in a sacred history long--and wrongly--suppressed. It demands profound correction of what Western civilization has been taught to call religion. It is a book that should be read by everyone."--Barbara G. Walker, author of The Woman's Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets, Feminist Fairy Tales, and others.

"This remarkable book introduces a Gnostic approach to Sophia-Gaia, the feminine wisdom principle embodied by the earth, vividly soliciting us to embrace Her revival for our survival. When the human race revered the fertility of the earth, the perennial philosophy of human kindness and good sense, as embodied in the common laws of indigenous people the world over, was equally prominent in ancient Europe. Gyncentric societies did not know the taint of sexual apartheid; mystery cults were participatory, experiential and peaceful. The erudition and mindfulness of the Pagan world have been hugely underestimated, since the onslaught of patriarchy, symbolized by the flood, destroyed a much larger civilization than we have been lead to believe. Initiated in antediluvian times with the arrival of misogynic sky gods, it took the three monotheistic religions to achieve the undoing of the sophisticated way of life of our forebears. In Gnostic terms, evil came from outside of the matrix of the earth, from another dimension or parallel universe. Entities of this parallel dimension managed to insinuate themselves into our world. It may come as a shock to many, that the Gnostics held Yahweh to be such an entity, facilitating the promotion of the perpetrator-victim ethos of Salvationism, held to be an abomination and a fateful error. John Lash presents the stark contrast between the tenets of retribution and exploitation - of the feminine , and the ethos of illuminism, with its emphasis on personal experience and communion with nature, within the framework of a vast body of knowledge, reaching from the classic authors of antiquity to present-day proponents of eco-science and eco-spirituality. A fascinating read."--Susanne G. Seiler, Gaia Media News. Basel, Switzerland

"Sometimes a book changes the world. Not In His Image is such a book. It is clear, stimulating, well-researched, and sure to outrage the experts. Take it from a scientist: the 'experts' are often wrong. In fact, a hallmark of breakthroughs is that they are usually well-researched and outrage 'experts.' Science shows the importance of trusting clear thinking about direct evidence. This book is full of both. Get it. Improve not just your own life, but civilization's chances for survival." --Roger Payne, Ph.D., MacArthur Fellow, president of Ocean Alliance, author of Among Whales

"John Lamb Lash's Not in His Image is a rare achievement, combining impeccable scholarship with remarkable visionary insight. In a breathtaking tour de force, the author provides a profound analysis of the history of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam and their connections to the patriarchal system. He identifies the deep roots of the intrinsic problems of these three religions-- perpetrator-victim emphasis and salvationist ideology--and points out their relationship to the alienation and agony of modern humanity. This book is a must for everybody who is trying to understand the psychospiritual currents underlying the present global crisis." --Stanislav Grof, M.D., author of Psychology of the Future and The Cosmic Game

"Not In His Image is a brilliantly subversive and provocative work of scholarship and passion that overturns everything you ever believed about Christianity. The gnostic mysteries have found a new and eloquent champion in John Lash." --Graham Hancock, author of Fingerprints of the Gods

"An extraordinary and profound book. Not In His Image a blessing, and a warning that we must cease taking the terrible advice of Christianity … and that we must instead re-inhabit our own joyful, painful, mortal, beautiful bodies and fight for our lives and for the lives of those we love. This book points the way home."--Derrick Jensen, from the afterword

"What we know about the divine comes by way of three paths--through the spectacle of nature, through the testimony of spiritual seekers, and through our own inner experience, as in meditation and mystical communion. John Lamb Lash seeks to renew our understanding of all three paths, and thus to renew our sense of the divine. In particular, he challenges the otherworldly creeds that have come down to us in Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, and to recover the earth-based religions that preceded them. Those ecologically wise religions flourished, he reminds us, not only among the native peoples of the Western Hemisphere but also in ancient Europe. By reclaiming this pagan heritage, he argues, we can begin to cure the pathologies of genocide, war, and environmental degradation that afflict the modern world." --Scott Russell Sanders, author of A Private History of Awe

"Not In His Image is a stunning book. It should cause quite a furor. Lash's historical and anthropological erudition are breathtaking." --Colin Wilson, author of Atlantis and the Kingdom of the Neanderthals: 100,000 Years of Lost History and The Outsider

"John Lash's heretical book is a precious act of spiritual disobedience that seeks to save the world from Salvationism. Lash opens new ground between myth and ecology, and helps one feel what the planet feels. He proposes direct knowing and moving beyond belief, and advocates animism as a proposition to test. He leaves the future open and in need of human imagination. Humanity is implicated in the future of the living planet, but Lash exercises caution when making suppositions about our role as a species. This book is learned, courageous, and full of insights. Some may find it challenging and even shocking, but it is an important read for those interested in life on earth. It is made for readers to chew on, rather than believe."--Jeremy Narby, anthropologist, author of The Cosmic Serpent, DNA and the Origins of Knowledge and Intelligence in Nature: An Inquiry into Knowledge

"John Lash's Not In His Image presents a fascinating view of meanings in a sacred history long—and wrongly—suppressed. It demands profound correction of what Western civilization has been taught to call religion. It is a book that should be read by everyone."
—Barbara G. Walker, author of The Woman’s Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets, Feminist Fairy Tales, and others.

This book is a must for everybody who is trying to understand the psychospiritual currents underlying the present global crisis."
—Stanislav Grof, M.D., author of Psychology of the Future and The Cosmic Game

"An extraordinary and profound book. Not In His Image a blessing, and a warning that we must cease taking the terrible advice of Christianity … and that we must instead re-inhabit our own joyful, painful, mortal, beautiful bodies and fight for our lives and for the lives of those we love. This book points the way home."
—Derrick Jensen, from the afterword

A key factor in humanity's choice between evolution or extinction?
By George Henry
Author John Lash is a careful and particularly insightful researcher with a unique perspective and voice, who has uncovered previously-hidden information coming from the deep past that is of paramount importance to humans today and has the potential to change the world for the better, if only the world at large would attend closely to it. Indeed, it may be that humanity's response to the information in Not in His Image (NIHI), and related intel propagated before and since by Lash, could be the most important key factor in determining whether humankind goes extinct or evolves into a more sustainable form - a union of intelligence, imagination and instinct expressed through animal bodies (with opposable thumbs) - that can enjoy lasting success.

I would rate Not in His Image as the most potentially transformative book, on an individual level, in my personal experience, and I have read many books that have such potential and were written to promote healing and growth through deeper understanding of what makes us human and what makes society tick, including both its necessary and beneficial aspects and its very significant downsides, i.e. "the evil that men [and women] do."

Of course followers of the Abahamic religions, especially Christianity, will find it difficult to read this book with an open mind, and negative reviews from that camp are understandable and somewhat predictable. In fact, Lash courageously sets himself up as a target by taking a stand for, and arguing for, a set of positions that are generally pretty far outside of the mainstream and form an overall worldview that is opposed to the mainstream in many ways. And why does he do that? It seems clear to me that he ardently believes not only that his positions are correct but that it's of vital importance to "get the message out" regarding them and to share with others the knowledge, reasoning and experiences that underlie his views. Those ends are clearly more important to him than the personal consequence of being loathed by people who take issue with his ideas and find him distasteful precisely because he presents a case for those ideas in a very persuasive and eloquent way. "He's extremely eloquent ... therefore extremely dangerous," wrote an FBI agent about Native American activist John Trudell. It's clear that some people feel the same way about Lash because he effectively demolishes the ideologies to which they're attached and with which they identify, clearly exposing those ideologies for what they really are.

I think anyone approaching material such as this does well to entertain the question, "Where is mainstream thinking, and where are mainstream values and their expressions, taking us as a species? What are they permitting or inducing us to do to the biosphere, the web of life on which we depend for our own existence?" - and then to consider the absolute necessity of making profound, carefully-selected and well-understood adjustments, individually and (preferably) as a species. The individual may feel that he or she does not have the power to change society, but if individuals do not at least start changing their own lives and outlooks for the better, society surely won't change in corresponding or similar ways.

No one really likes to have it pointed out that they are on a path by which they're damaging themselves and contributing to the downfall of their species (indeed, unimaginable destruction - that we don't have to imagine because it is occurring incrementally in the news day by day, so all we really have to do is pay attention); but that unpleasant exposure, and especially the exposure of root causes, is a necessary concomitant of laying the groundwork for pointing out that there is a better path, and outlining that path. (NIHI actually does all of this and more.)

The "new" path really won't work, and cannot work, if polluted and deviated by mixing it with aspects the "old" path, regardless of people's tendency to overlook and justify harmful aspects of the way we've been used to doing things. That's why it is necessary to throw those harmful aspects into sharp relief.

It's also worth noting that the positive evolutionary path Lash promotes is not something that he has personally invented, a completely new and fresh innovation; rather, it's a path that our ancestors were actually on, a long time ago, from which they were deviated by insidious ideology, to our harm and sorrow today. The process of deviation was so thorough and successful in its effect that the details of what was lost were buried, hidden and largely forgotten; and, to the best of my knowledge, they have not been reassembled and set forth previously in modern times with the degree of clarity found in NIHI. Certainly I don't know of any book other than the one under discussion that exposes those details and the bigger picture to which they logically add up effectively and clearly enough to induce such a profound alteration in a person's understanding of the world, its problems and their (real, feasible and uniquely effective) solutions, motivating him or her to very well-defined life-changing positive action undertaken with confidence and assurance. While those effects are definitely not guaranteed, some readers do experience them - as I know from personal experience.

In short and simple terms, anyone who hasn't read this book needs to do so. It is potentially the most important and life-changing book you will ever read. I can't recommend it too highly.

For the purpose of keeping this review short, I will simply say that I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with the review posted by S.Nelsen on 12/9/13.
I am an avid reader, but I constantly found myself skipping through paragraphs and even whole chapters in an attempt to just get to the 'point'!
The front cover, with it's hazy,out-of-focus image, accurately depicts how I felt after a few hours. There's some really great content here, but I just can't continue to frustrate myself with how it's delivered. Perhaps I'll try again after my summer reading list dwindles down; but for now, I'm on to the next one!

You'll have to give it time and concentration, but this book is absolutely worth reading - if you want to get down to the roots of modern malaise, the spiritual corruption of the Abrahamic religions, and the clarifying message of Gnosticism, which Lash equates with the pagan Mysteries. I am not enough of a scholar to thoroughly vet his research or his message, but his arguments ring true. And he answers the question of how Europeans could so completely decimate the indigenous civilisations of the New World -- because they had already been enslaved and colonised (spiritually) by ... well, read it and see.

Colonial Spectacles: The Netherlands And the Dutch East Indies at the World Exhibitions, 1880-1931, by Marieke Bloembergen, Translated

Dutch colonial presentations at the world exhibitions between 1880 and 1931 helped to legitimise the Dutch imperialist project. They also highlighted the issue of Dutch identity and the Netherland's place in the world.

The Netherlands showed off its colonies by erecting models of schools, factories, bridges, railway exhibits, which were meant to give proof of the good works of modern colonial administration and enterprise. Alongside these displays were exhibits illustrating the lifestyle and culture of indigenous people, including not only displays of ethnographic objects, but also life-size temples and villages inhabited by Javanese and Sumatrans brought to Europe specifically for these expositions. These colonial spectacles provided an 'outer' world that gave an 'immediacy' to visitors to the exhibition.

Review
'Colonial Spectacles' shows that relations between East and West (or the West and its colonies) involved a continuous re-conceptualisation of both the 'other' and the 'self.' Dutch representations of colonial culture provide an image of metropolitan culture that reveals the pride and anxieties of the Dutch at home. The book is well written and a pleasure to read. --Piet de Rooy, University of Amsterday

World as Laboratory: Experiments with Mice, Mazes, and Men, by Rebecca Lemov

Deeply researched, World as Laboratory tells a secret history that's not really a secret. The fruits of human engineering are all around us: advertising, polls, focus groups, the ubiquitous habit of "spin" practiced by marketers and politicians. What Rebecca Lemov cleverly traces for the first time is how the absurd, the practical, and the dangerous experiments of the human engineers of the first half of the twentieth century left their laboratories to become our day-to-day reality.

From Publishers Weekly
Lemov, a historian and anthropologist, addresses nearly a century of study into "human engineering," the idea that behavior can be modified through manipulation of the surrounding environment. The social implications of such research are important, but equally worth pondering, she suggests, is what it tells us about "the impulse for scientific experimentation" and how far scientists will go to indulge it. Some of her most intriguing passages deal with individual researchers like fear specialist O. Hobart Mowrer and sociologist John Dollard and how their theories—their career paths, even—were shaped by their emotional conditions. But Lemov balances this personal approach with close consideration of the major institutions involved, tracking the effect of grants handed out by the Rockefeller Foundation and digging into the vast archives of Yale's anthropological database (all the more remarkable for being entirely on paper). She also reports on the government's interest in the field, including the CIA's encouragement of research designed both to combat and refine psychological torture. Lemov's final charge, that "many people continue to suffer from the use of these techniques" as deployed by consumer surveys and political polls, needs substantiation, but her historical argument is both eye-opening and persuasive. From Booklist
Lemov explores the behavioral sciences during the years 1900-60, after which much of the human experimentation previously conducted acquired an odious reputation; the author remarks she was predisposed to dislike the psychologists, anthropologists, and sociologists who conducted it. Lemov improved her opinion of them, but her well-researched book nevertheless imparts a sense of uneasiness about human engineering. An outgrowth of stimulus-response experiments on animals, behavior modification of people became the goal of ambitious psychologists such as John Watson, coiner of the conditioned-response theory. Tellingly, he eventually went into advertising, while in his wake in the 1920s, foundations directed by behaviorist enthusiasts funded behavioral science centers at Yale and Harvard. With World War II, Lemov remarks, their denizens traded lab coats for uniforms, applying behavioral theories to occupied areas. A balanced account of the behaviorists' crusade, Lemov's history provides crucial backstory to contemporary practices in psychology and mass media. Gilbert Taylor

Praise for World as Laboratory:

â??Delves into both the grotesque and the comical experiments that built the modern world . . . With a healthy sense of amusement and an appreciation for the absurd, Lemov recounts the attempts of the now largely defunct fields of behaviorism and behavioral engineering to quantify, predict and ultimately control human behavior . . . the book handles tough subjects in a deft and even charming manner.â? â??Seed Magazine

â??Rebecca Lemov, a lecturer at the University of Washington, has produced a lively and well-researched history of the human engineering field and its broad intellectual and social legacy.â? â??Michael O'Donnell, The San Francisco Chronicle

5 stars for the subject matter - but only 3 for the content
By D. Hodgson
Considering the incendiary nature of the topic (social control, brainwashing, forcible interrogations, chemical coercion) the euphemistic title of this book says much about how the content is treated. Mice, mazes and men - sounds harmless, no outrage there. Yet the history of how American behaviorists extrapolating from the techniques of B.F. Skinner (who oddly receives little mention) & Joseph Mengele (whose failed sleep-coma experiments were copied in the CIA's MK-ULTRA program) receives no mention at all.

Reading along through all the chapters, the actual "what can I take with me" information is very light, although the lengthy descriptions of many of the behaviorists' personal histories are more than sufficient. For all the talk about rat maze experiments and their importance, few are actually discussed in detail and fewer still are the facts actually learned from these.

In Part Three, "Files: Out Of The Laboratory" much is made of how -large- the files on human cultures collected at Yale were, and how -exhaustively- they were cataloged - but few examples are given of the data itself, who the data-gatherers were, and what protocols these data gatherers followed in their world travels, if anything.

And what practical techniques, exactly, did the modern beneficiaries of all this Cold-War experimenting (public relations, advertising, pollsters, marketing, government, the State Department) get out all of this? Entire books have been written on the techniques of persuasion used by each of these groups yet in "World As Laboratory" the reader walks away with very little in terms of concrete, practical modern-day examples.

The "thriller" part of the book, of course is Chapter 10's "The Impossible Experiment" documenting the CIA's brainwashing and drug experiments which rank among the most putrid of shames ever perpitrated upon American citizens by their own government. Yet, while related subjects such as Stanley Milgram's experiments are given great coverage, the equally important (and horrifying) Stanford Prison experiments are glossed over in just a couple paragraphs.

If you're wondering how Rebecca wraps this all up in her Conclusions, one need only refer to title of the book again - ultimately, the author is sympathetic, and even slightly admiring, of the scientific amoralists portrayed in the book. And although she tries to reassure the reader that attempts to create a Manchurian Candidate were unreliable and inconsistent at best, one can't help but feel that Rebecca is (mildly) rooting for the wrong team.

Lessons from Questionable Experiments
By Rob Hardy
You want people to do your bidding; it's only natural. And governments, of course, would like other governments to do their bidding, but they'd like to have their own people do their bidding, too. How can this sort of influence best be strengthened? Well, perhaps it would be best to go to the people who study stimuli, responses, drives, and so on, to see what makes people tick. And if the researchers have a good idea of what influences people, then surely they are the ones to consult about actually doing the influencing. It has already been done, of course, and historian and anthropologist Rebecca Lemov has documented the history of such research and attempts at control in World as Laboratory: Mice, Mazes, and Men (Hill and Wang). It is an extraordinary story about very smart guys doing experiments, some of which were quite stupid and some which caused a great deal of suffering (to both animals and humans) to see how subjects could be made to learn the right way to behave. Lemov demonstrates that this was not some ivory tower effort at great remove, but a movement whose results are still with us.

The book starts with rat experiments. Regardless of how you feel about putting rats through such trials, the astonishing fact is that rats were so wonderfully controllable that the researchers assumed that if they just knew the right conditions to administer to humans, they could, as Lemov writes, "... explain the full range of human behavior and make it predictable and therefore controllable." Scientists were sure that if they could make rats do something, they could make humans do it, too. Then they could explain such phenomena as love and union organizing, looking at internal states in an objective, perhaps mathematical way. Some of the most benign experiments on humans were the Hawthorne experiments, which found that just paying experimental attention to humans helped their morale. Other experiments were less benign. Psychiatric patients got LSD or induced comas, without their permission or knowledge. Some got a recorded message like "You killed your mother" piped into their ears thousands of times. However, turning people into ciphers might be easy, but it also isn't very useful. Despite the interest and funding of such organizations as the CIA, researchers kept coming up against a very real problem in getting people to do what the researchers (or government) wanted them to do, or reveal what they wanted them to reveal: a real change in behavior does not happen without full and willing cooperation. There is one mention in the book of Abu Ghraib, but no reader will be able to avoid thinking of it frequently.

The bizarre experiments thus had a hopeful lesson. Brainwashing can be simply done, but it is useless simply to brainwash a person if you expect to control that person. You could create a vegetable, but that was useless; when researchers tried to instill, rather than erase, behavior, as one veteran of the CIA's MK-ULTRA program wrote, they failed eventually because "...the subject jerked himself back for some reason or the subject got amnesiac or catatonic." In all these grand plans for controlling people for society's good, no one could overcome the great obstacle that not only are people not rats, they are individuals, and no one plan is going to accomplish change for them all. Lemov shows that besides this failure, there is a legacy of such scientific effort: focus groups, consumer research, political polling. It isn't nearly as close to control as the scientists described here wanted to get, and let's be glad of that.

Psychology Beyond Skinner
By James Gregg
I greatly enjoyed and appreciated Ms. Lemov's review of the evolution of behavioral psychology and the analysis of its weaknesses. As a student of B.F. Skinner at Harvard in the 1950s, I have had a lifelong interest in this subject.

First, Ms. Lemov exposes the basic risks and dangers of "behavioral engineering" and "control" in democratic societies. She also reveals the inadequate appreciation by behaviorists of the distinctions between the nature of humans and that of other animals. This failure was a fatal flaw in the behavioral concepts. Most significantly, if one accepts the concept of the need for "social engineering," the behaviorists never provided a persuasive set of social goals that should be attained by such methods. What is the point of social engineering and control with no clearcut ends in mind?

For anyone interested in the history of psychology, this book is a "must read."

Brainwashing of a different kind - one that leads to a better life
By Elizabeth Pavlovna
Thoughts lead to actions, actions lead to results and if our thoughts are negative the actions we take will lead to unwanted or at best, poor results. But we can change that and in this book Erica Sellers takes you by the hand, and shows how to control your thoughts, how to change them from negative to positive. This is simple albeit not easy, as thoughts are the mere consciousness of a deep seated mindset, and that is at the crux of the whole issue. Sellers addresses different situations that we are faced with every day, how to catch yourself in the midst of your thought and turn it to a positive option instead. Little by little your outlook changes as you work on your mindset, you will see things differently, deal with small and even life threatening challenges from a different angle, be in control of your life instead of life being in control of you. Excellent reading.

simplistic waste of time
By Bubbles
This book is a joke. It's more like a pamphet in length, but it's probably because it has nothing to say. It's billed as giving specific techniques for controlling negative thoughts, but offers nothing beyond generalities like "reduce stress" and "get enough sleep." Gee, thanks for these helpful tips. This "book" is a pep talk with no information beyond what a fourth grader doesn't already know. I feel so ripped off and am left to wonder who wrote the positive reviews of this simplistic and useless piece.

Hacking your mind.
By Emerson B.
I proved the techniques in this book work because I tried the suggested breathing techniques, where you just focus on breathing, and it really helped me fall asleep.Thinking too much before sleep is the biggest cause of my insomnia. This read helps you be positive, have the right outlook on life, and not harp on the negative.

"Her plot is solid, and is very movie or television friendly . . . lots of action; pathos; conflict; glamour; etc. It's all there, and Heckenkamp is a confident and sure writer. She has no trouble keeping all of her balls in the air and resolving them at the end of this page-turner with a flair."

a great summer read for teens/adults
By danardoyle, author of The Answer for Families, Hope for Healing & God Messaging, Will You Accept...
"Past Suspicion" by Therese Heckenkamp is a terrific fiction novel suitable for teens and adults as well. It is the story of a young woman whose mother dies and leaves her in the care of an uncle that she has never met. Forced to live in an unfamiliar sleepy little town, Robin plans her escape upon her eighteenth birthday. While tolerating her circumstances and looking forward to "freedom," she discovers much about her mother's secretive past that intrigues her. This leads her to delve more deeply into the mysterious events of her mother's past. Along the way, Robin forms some special relationships and learns to love and to trust once again.

Therese masterfully develops the characters so that the reader truly feels involved in the story and has an interest in Robin's personal outcome. Though I usually prefer to read nonfiction, I was drawn to pick up Therese's book again and again as the characters were believable and their issues were things for which I felt I could relate. This book would make a great summer read for teens and adults! I know you will enjoy it!

A particularly compelling achievement
By Midwest Book Review
It is not often that I write about a woman who cut her first draft of a mystery at age eighteen, but it is true in the case of Therese Heckenkamp, a fellow Wisconsinite! Heckenkamp has already won numerous awards for writing at her young age and lives in Pewaukee, Wisconsin.
Robin Finley has just lost her mother, her home, and any family except an uncle in some small town in Wisconsin, where she is headed for an uncertain future. She meets two young men, almost right off the bat. One is a newspaper reporter, and the other is a "free spirit" who captures her imagination and desire for freedom. Then there is the matter of just what happened to her mother in this small town. She had a mysterious fall off of a balcony at a deserted mansion more than twenty years before. Robin begins to unravel the story of her mother's high school years: the romances; the "fall"; her relationship with Robin's quiet but caring uncle; and the map, which turns into the focal point of the story. Robin also overhears a conversation which leads her to believe she might be in danger:
"The words were spoken with such wrath, it hurt my ears to hear what little I did, but I had to stay and listen. What did this mean? I trembled in my hiding place. The very fact that these two guys-the only two guys I knew in this whole town-were together, alerted me that something was up..."
Being home-schooled, Heckenkamp probably understands something about the brilliant recluse. It shows in her writing. Her heroine is sensitive, angry, hurt, intelligent, stubborn, curious, and has a large heart underneath all of her confusion. She is a typical seventeen year old...Heckenkamp captures the angst of those years beautifully. Her plot is solid, and is very movie or television friendly...lots of action; pathos; conflict; glamour; etc. It's all there, and Heckenkamp is a confident and sure writer. She has no trouble keeping all of her balls in the air and resolving them at the end of this page-turner with a flair. Her denouement is terrifying, exciting, and then whoosh...she brings in the romantic element with panache.
Past Suspicion is a terrific first mystery/novel from a very promising talent. It is a particularly compelling achievement considering Ms. Heckenkamp has her future ahead of her. Bravo!

Clean and Exciting
By Aravis
After reading several disappointing or even disturbing Christian YA fiction books, I was reluctant to give Past Suspicion a chance. But when I discovered that the author was an eighteen-year-old homeschooler when she wrote the first draft, I bought the book, my expectations high. I wasn't let down. Past Suspicion is a decent suspense novel marked by tastefulness and believability.
Robin Finley, a sheltered seventeen-year-old, is forced to move to Wisconsin from California after her mother's sudden passing. Feeling stifled by the idea of small-town life with an uncle she barely knows, Robin counts the days until her grand escape to freedom on her eighteenth birthday. While working at her uncle's bookstore, she separately meets two young men interested in helping her sort out her mother's past, forever marked by her tragic fall from a local haunted mansion. Robin pores through old newspapers and her mother's teenage diary, trying to find the truth about the accident as the two young men compete for her attention. Now Robin must find out who her mother was - and who she herself will be - in the midst of a sinister plot that takes everyone by surprise.
Robin is a very believable character. She's no angel, but neither is she an aggravating brat. She's a very realistic, relatable teen struggling with a desire for freedom. She has moments of rebellion, passion, stubbornness, silliness, and gullibility, just like any average teen. Robin's intelligence and sense of decency make her very likeable and understandable.
What I really appreciated about this book is its ability to be exciting without compromising decency. Though the book contains elements of crime, violence, and evil, it never goes overboard. It's a definite accomplishment considering the plot revolves around two violent falls at a spooky mansion. Also tastefully handled is the romance element. Robin is being pursued romantically by two young men, but neither guy gets aggressive with her. Never does the book stray into raunchy territory at all; even though both guys spend some alone time with Robin, nothing inappropriate happens. The romance is understated and sweeter than commonly found in YA books, even other Christian ones.
Past Suspicion is a solid three star book that manages to be exciting without being tasteless. I recommend this one to readers age twelve and up who seek good, clean adventure tinged with romance and suspense. This is a story that will keep you flipping pages - or mashing Kindle keys.
